And now I would like to greet and introduce Rosanne Galea and Diana Busuttil from Malta and show their video presentation about their private school, Future Focus.

Good morning to you all – partners, colleagues, experts, students and guests – and thank you to the co-ordinator of this project Lia Pensabene for putting together this beautiful event. I feel very honoured to participate together with you all within this DIM multiplier event.

I would like to start by introducing myself … I am Diana Busuttil, lawyer by profession and Head of Institution at Future Focus Ltd. I have been working with Future Focus for the past 4 years, where I have had the opportunity to meet many students and to guide them through their journey of training and education.

Although in their majority Future Focus students are Maltese, we also have a good number of European and International students. It is because of this that the DIM project caught my interest in that it provides for a jewel where it comes to assistance in the integration of migrant students within Malta. We selected Tagalog, a language of the Philippines because of the predominance of Filipino students at Future Focus. Their preferred area of study is care for the elderly – here, although lessons could easily be followed since they are delivered in English, where it came to practicals, communication was more challenging.

With this in mind, Future Focus instantly embraced the invitation for DIM from CPIA Avellino in October 2018. We immediately understood the benefit of this exceptional tool that is being made available to teachers and workers for communication with the migrant students, and vice versa. Today, through this event, this wealth of information is being disseminated and shared further, with the objective of benefitting the greatest numbers possible.

I would like to now, take you through our personal experience in completing the tasks for the DIM Erasmus+ project as partners from Malta

Future Focus in Floriana Malta, provides the environment where learning becomes a motivational experience. Managing Director Rosanne Galea has for the past 20 years worked towards providing lifelong learning opportunities. Students who enroll with Future Focus have in fact found that prospects do not only cater for their education but we focus on the students’ future with the objective of enhancing their careers.

For this reason, it was certain that the DIM dictionary will provide for a valuable tool that would assist Future Focus students in reaching their goals. As a partner country we selected Tagalog the language of the Philippines to be our target language.

Future Focus Director Rosanne Galea and I, attended the kick-off transnational meeting that was held in Avellino in October 2018.  Partners were given training for the collection of data. It was decided which foreign countries would feature in the dictionary.

‘Greetings from Avellino. We are here together, Rosanne Galea and I, to represent Future Focus LTD on an Erasmus+ project. The project is called DiM and it is about a dictionary that will be created through collaboration between 6 partners including 4 EU educational institutions. The partners countries will be translating several words into their own language and into the language of migrant students within their countries. The objective of this project is that the collections of translations into all the languages are brought together. A dictionary that can be used by the migrant students to facilitate their studies and improve their educational experience.’

Back home we embarked on the tasks described in the transnational meeting. Our chosen language was Tagalog – the language spoken in the Philippines. We started the work of informing our Philippine students that they would form a very important part of an Erasmus+ project. Not only, but Future Focus had selected their native language as the target language to feature in the dictionary.

We worked together and I can say that a special friendship was formed. The process of translation was not always straightforward since sometimes more than one version was offered from different students, so in these cases we needed to go further into the exploration of the language.

‘Good Evening, I am Rodelyn Joy Manuel. I was born in the Philippines. I am 26 years old. I live in Malta now. I am a student. I can speak two languages: Filipino and English. Thank you.’

Necessarily translations needed to be conducted also into the Maltese language. These are to provide the direct translation for the needs of the students. Translation into Maltese was done at the office, however these were eventually also checked by a language expert.

In May 2019 project partners were welcomed for a meeting in Lugo. We discussed the results of our work, the methodology applied and the challenges and difficulties that we came across when working on tasks. Back home we worked on refining our work by including details to the translations, like definitions of the words. Another step was that to record audio files so that we produced corresponding pronunciation for every word in both languages. Here the help of the students was required and it was important that correct and clear pronunciations are collected. Another task was to translate the words into pictures.

Training in Malta was held in November 2019. Meetings were held at the Future Focus premises. Partners received training on how to use the online dictionary. Translations had been made into 11 languages. Lia Pensabene the coordinator gave a lecture on the language heritage and the importance of learning languages. A workshop showed how partners needed to complete socio-linguistic profiles. The last step to complete the project requirements was the collection of country and language profiles of Malta and the Philippines. We organized meetings with our students to explain this task. The compilation of this information proved to be an additional interesting trip into the history of the countries and languages in question, both for the project partners and the students who helped. A selection of these fascinating facts will also be shared with you.

A final word would be that of congratulating the coordinator of DIM, Lia Pensabene who through accurate coordination brought to fruition this magnificent project output the DIM dictionary. Thank you for providing constant guidance throughout these two years. Also, thanks to all the partners for perfect cooperation as a true team. Last but not least, the protagonists of this project – the students – for an experience that was holistic in every way.

‘By means of this dictionary, my friends and I can better understand words and phrases that we come across when we are studying. Sometimes we need to communicate with people who do not understand our language’.

‘By means of the help that we can get through the DiM dictionary, we feel more included within this country that has a different culture to our own, and we feel part of this society that we are living in’.

Grazzi!

11 — Malta — Future Focus LTD

Ho 26 anni e ora vivo a Malta.
